Durham Public Schools will be closed Friday while other Triangle districts will dismiss early as a winter weather storm approaches.
The Wake County, Orange County, Chatham County, Chapel Hill-Carrboro and Johnston County school systems will dismiss early on Friday.
Wake County, Orange County and Johnston County school systems will dismiss students three hours early on Friday. Chapel Hill-Carrboro will dismiss two hours early.
Chatham County will dismiss all schools at 11:30 a.m.
A winter storm warning was issued Thursday afternoon for all of central North Carolina from 1 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday.
Late Thursday, Gov. Josh Stein declared a statewide state of emergency, which activates storm response resources and could provide federal reimbursement if necessary.
The N.C. Department of Transportation has been brining roads in advance of the storm, and is on deck to plow and treat snow and ice on state-maintained roads, according to a release from the Governor’s Office.
- Durham Public Schools: Closed Friday and through the weekend. All district activities are canceled.
- Wake County: Most Wake high schools will dismiss at 11:18 a.m. Most middle schools will dismiss at 12 p.m. Most elementary schools will dismiss at 12:45 p.m.
- Chapel Hill-Carrboro: Dismissal times will be 12:35 p.m. for elementary schools, 1:20 p.m. for middle schools and 2 p.m. for high schools.
- Orange County: Dismissal times will be 12:35 p.m. for elementary schools, 1:20 p.m. for middle schools and 2 p.m. for high schools.
- Johnston County: All schools will dismiss three hours early on Friday. Early College Academy and CTLA will be closed to students and staff for the entire day.
- Chatham County: All schools will dismiss at 11:30 a.m.
Athletics cancellations at Wake, Orange schools
Wake and Chatham say athletic and extracurricular events on Friday and Saturday are canceled. Chapel Hill-Carrboro and Orange County are postponing or canceling athletic and extracurricular activities through Sunday.
School buses will provide transportation home for students who ride by bus and parents will be able to pick up their children for rides home as they usually do. School staff will stay with students at schools until arrangements have been made for each child to get home safely.
