President Donald Trump took to X on Tuesday with a video linking the fatal stabbing of a Ukrainian refugee on a light rail train in Charlotte last month to policies and leaders in Democratic-run cities.
Iryna Zarutska, 23, was stabbed to death by a stranger on the train Aug. 22
After the Charlotte Area Transit System released video of the stabbing last week, several media outlets shared part of the footage, fueling its rise on social media as Republican politicians and their supporters pounced on the case.
“In Charlotte, North Carolina, we saw the results of these policies when a 23-year-old who came here from Ukraine met her bloody end on a public train,” the president said in the new video.
He called Zarutska “a beautiful young girl that never had problems in life, with a magnificent future in this country,” and held up a photo of her next to the man charged with her death.
Zarutska was stabbed in the throat by a man sitting behind her on the Lynx Blue Line. Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, was charged with first-degree murder after being identified as the suspect. Trump called Brown “a deranged monster,” and noted his 14 prior arrests.
On Tuesday, federal authorities also charged Brown with one count of committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system, and potentially could face the death penalty if convicted.
About the Iryana Zarutska case
Zarutska emigrated to the United States from Kyiv, Ukraine, to escape the violence from Russia’s invasion, her family wrote on a GoFundMe account.
In the video, Trump repeated the need for “law and order” in the country.
Brown had served more than five years in prison for a 2014 armed robbery while on parole, The Charlotte Observer previously reported, and he has been in and out of the court system for the past decade. During that period, magistrates have set both secured and unsecured bonds for Brown.
“We cannot allow a depraved criminal element of violent repeat offenders to continue spreading destruction and death throughout our country,” Trump said. “We have to be vicious just like they are. It’s the only thing they understand.”
