Raleigh will experience “periods of dangerously hot weather” into the weekend, as heat index values can peak as high as the upper 90s and stretch near 105 degrees.
It will feel unbearable with heavy humidity, and the unusually hot conditions will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for those without air conditioning or with underlying conditions.
The News & Observer spoke with Brandon Locklear, a lead meteorologist with National Weather Service Raleigh, about the week ahead. Here’s what to know.
How hot will it be in the Raleigh area this week?
The Raleigh and Durham area will experience temperatures in the 90s and 100s this week, occasionally finding pockets of relief in the mid to high 80s, Locklear said. (All temperatures mentioned are in Farenheit.)
“When you look at the entire week, it’s just going to be hot. But a little different compared to last, since we’ll have some weak fronts moving through the area,” he said.
“That means a brief period of cooler temps but more so lower humidity, which will make it feel noticeably cooler, even though the real temperature change is only about two or three degrees,” he said.
These temperatures are about 10 degrees above average for late June in the Raleigh area, but temperature often isn’t the main factor when you get to this time of year. It’s the humidity.
“We have vulnerable and sensitive groups who don’t have such high tolerances to weather like this. You don’t have to have heat headlines to be a good neighbor,” Locklear said.
You can just walk outside and think ‘I know the effect this is having on me, and this person is probably feeling it even worse than I am.’ Just make sure you’re checking in on people during extreme weather like this.”
Will Raleigh get rain this week?
Raleigh may get some rain, but not much.
“We’re not only dealing with heat, but also a drought. It doesn’t look like we’ll have much relief this week,” Locklear said.
The Raleigh area could experience rain:
Wednesday overnight into Thursday morning
Sunday evening
Raleigh can expect about a quarter of an inch total between Monday and Thursday.
There’s a chance for more substantial rain on Sunday, but it’s too soon to tell how much.
