After recently opening dozens of new stores across the state, Dollar General is closing its space on East Davie Street in downtown Raleigh.

“At Dollar General, we continually evaluate our stores and how we can best serve our customers, and after a thorough review, we made the decision to close our Raleigh DGX location,” a spokesperson with the company told The News & Observer.

“We have a longstanding history in Raleigh, having opened our first DG more than 27 years ago, and we remain committed to serving our customers at our seven other locations within the city limits.”

A store employee said it will close in early December, according to Triangle Business Journal who first reported the closure.

Impacted employees were offered an opportunity to transfer to one of the other stores in the area, the spokesperson confirmed.

DGX stores, like the East Davie location, are generally smaller than Dollar General stores and offer more grab-and-go items.

The East Davie Street store is the only Dollar General location in Raleigh that sold fresh produce, The N&O previously reported as part of our summer grocery store price check project.

Dollar General stores in NC

The Kentucky-based wholesale store that’s grown to become one of the largest small-box retailers in the country opened its flagship location in 1955, according to its website. Now, the chain has more than 19,000 stores in 48 states, including over 1,000 in North Carolina.

In the past year, Dollar General opened 41 stores in the Tar Heel State — an average of one every nine days, The N&O previously reported. That keeps up with about the same pace of openings the chain has had statewide for the past 15 years.

But it’s unclear why the company decided to close its downtown Raleigh location.

The N&O reached out to learn when the store’s final day of business will be and if any other nearby locations will close.
