ABC11 WTVD-TV, central North Carolina’s ABC station, will be recording and producing all daily newscasts in downtown Durham by the end of the year.

One of the longest-running local news stations in the Triangle is making a change.

ABC11 WTVD-TV, central North Carolina’s ABC station, will be recording and producing all daily newscasts in downtown Durham by early 2025. These newscasts will come out of the station’s existing Durham studio at 411 Liberty St.

While ABC11 has been working out of both Raleigh and Durham studios for quite some time, the 32,000-square foot Durham broadcast facility offers more space to add state-of-the-art equipment and change stage setups. These additions and changes are expected to transform viewers’ experiences.

Will ABC11 still cover Raleigh?

Yes. Wake County is the largest in ABC11’s 23-county viewing area, and the move will not diminish community coverage.

The ABC11 Raleigh Eyewitness News Center, a Fayetteville Street staple since 2005, will still have reporters and photographers based there.

ABC11’s history in Raleigh/Durham

The change comes shortly after the ABC11 Eyewitness News reached a 70-year milestone of covering news in communities around the area.

ABC11 WTVD originally made its mark back in 1954 as the first and longest-running commercial television station in the Raleigh-Durham-Fayetteville viewing area, the station website says, with a lot of changes internally and externally since then.

The team’s first news studios sat in a “converted tuberculosis sanitarium” in downtown Durham, according to the station website. Then, nearly 20 years later, a new broadcast facility was built close by on Liberty Street — which is where all the daily newscasts for ABC11/WTVD will soon be recorded.

ABC11 partnership with The News & Observer

ABC11 and The N&O are newsgathering partners and often collaborate to share important information across the Triangle.

The move to daily newscasts out of the downtown Durham studio will not impact this reporting partnership.
