Tropical Storm Debby is inching closer towards North Carolina, with a possibility of heavy rains, intense flooding and widespread power outages.

Debby continues to be mainly a flooding threat. The storm is expected to drop an additional three to nine inches of rain over parts of North Carolina through Friday, which would bring the totals for the week up to 15 inches in some parts of southeastern NC, The News & Observer previously reported.

“We expect this storm to continue its slow, gradual approach, bringing multiple days of heavy rainfall and the potential for widespread and severe flash flooding,” Gov. Roy Cooper said Wednesday in a press release. “We encourage all North Carolinians to closely monitor weather especially in low-lying areas, have reliable ways to receive weather alerts and information, and to have an emergency plan for your household.”

Much of the rainfall from the storm has been in the southeastern part of the state, NC Emergency Management said Wednesday, but “the heavy rainfall threat will expand in coverage and become more widespread across central and eastern NC this evening and tonight.”
