He spent $5 on NC lottery ticket — and won more than enough to buy Christmas dinner

A North Carolina man said he’ll treat his family to Christmas dinner after winning a top lottery prize.

Herman Hester, a warehouse worker from Creedmoor, bought a $5 “Bonus Bucks” scratch-off lottery ticket from the A-1 Food Mart in Franklinton, according to a news release from the North Carolina Education Lottery.

He scratched the ticket in his truck — and realized he won $200,000, the lottery said.

“Then I took it inside to show the woman at the register,” Hester said, according to the lottery. “She said I needed to come to Raleigh.”

He claimed his prize Tuesday, Dec. 14, and took home $141,501 after taxes.

Hester told lottery officials he’ll use some of the money to take care of his family’s Christmas dinner.

“I’m going to pay my bills, pay my truck off, pay off my house, and help everybody else,” he told lottery officials.

Creedmoor is in Granville County, about 25 miles north of Raleigh.
