Social worker plans to help pay for his twins’ tuition with North Carolina lottery win
A North Carolina man plans to help pay for his twin sons’ tuition after a big lottery win.
Christopher Mills, a 59-year-old social worker from Winterville, bought a $20 “Winter Winnings” scratch-off lottery ticket from a convenience stores in Kinston, according to a news release from the North Carolina Education Lottery.
He went back to his car to scratch the ticket and told lottery officials he had to put on his glasses to double-check the ticket when he saw he had won a $100,000 prize.
“I thought, ‘What in the world, this can’t be right,’” Mills said, according to the lottery. “It was unbelievable.”
He claimed his prize Wednesday, Dec. 8, and took home $70,756 after taxes.
Mills, who has worked in North Carolina for 25 years, told lottery officials he wants to use the money to help pay for his sons’ tuition. The two are set to graduate next December with Master of Business Administration degrees from Campbell University, which is in Buies Creek.
Mills is the first person to win a $100,000 prize in the “Winter Winnings” game, which launched in November with two $1 million prizes and two $100,000 prizes, according to the lottery.
Winterville is in Pitt County, about 85 miles east of Raleigh.
