Beachgoers find body of 78-year-old washed ashore on North Carolina coast, police say

The body of a 78-year-old Montana man was found washed ashore on a North Carolina beach, police say.

Beachgoers found the body just after 6 a.m. Friday on Caswell Beach near the Pinehurst Road access, according to a release from the Caswell Beach Police Department.

The medical examiner responded to the beach, and the body was taken to Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport, police say. The U.S. Coast Guard was also notified.

The body was later identified as 78-year-old Jon Eden from Bozeman, Montana, police said Saturday.

Bozeman visited Caswell Beach often, but police said they are unaware of any other ties to Brunswick County.

Officials have not determined the cause of death and are waiting on an autopsy, the release says. Police say they’ll release more information if it becomes available.

No other details were available Sunday morning.
