Two rescued after fisherman goes into waterway to save 13-year-old, NC police say
A fisherman and teenager were rescued from a North Carolina waterway Sunday afternoon after both were swept away by a strong current, police say.
The man was fishing near Snow’s Cut Bridge on Carolina Beach when he saw a 13-year-old who was playing nearby get swept under water, according to a Monday news release from the Wilmington Police Department.
The fisherman went in to help the teen but was also swept away by the strong current, police say.
Both were struggling “to keep their heads above water” when members of the police department’s Maritime Task Force Unit who were patrolling near the bridge at about 1:45 p.m. saw them, the release says.
The rescuers then used a throw line to pull the two out of the water, police say.
EMS came to the waterway and “cleared the teen,” police say.
“There was a language barrier for both males, and the older male left before providing his information,” the release says.
No other information about the rescue was released as of Monday morning.
Carolina Beach is on the coast, near Wilmington and about 140 miles from Raleigh.
