Local TV station has a new sports director. Here’s what to know about the new hire
CBS 17 has a new sports director, the station announced in a press release Wednesday, Dec. 11.
Kevin Holden comes to the Triangle from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he most recently worked as sports director for CBS affiliate WDJT.
“Having Kevin join CBS 17 News as our sports director is great addition for the station and community,” news director Ed Trauschke said in the press release. “He’s a world class storyteller, who knows sports on a national and local level. Not only has he anchored and reported on the biggest stories from the world of sports, but he’s also done play-by-play for multiple teams over the years.”
Holden’s first day at the Triangle station was Monday, Dec. 9.
“I’m excited to come to CBS 17 and be able to cover all the great sport stories in the Triangle,” Holden said in the release. “This area has the best college basketball in the country, along with a thriving football scene. It’s thrilling to be able to cover the NHL on a daily basis with the Carolina Hurricanes.”
Kevin Holden’s previous experience in sports
In addition to serving as sports director for the Milwaukee CBS affiliate, Holden — who is bilingual — did a play-by-play for the Brewers and Green Bay Packers on their Spanish-language broadcasts.
He has also previously worked at WOFL in Orlando, Florida, News 8 in Austin, Texas, and WHNS in Greenville, South Carolina.
His journalism career began at WDNN in Dalton, Georgia. He studied journalism at the University of Georgia.
Recent changes at CBS 17
Holden is the latest in a series of recent hires for the station.
In August, CBS 17 welcomed Baron James as a weekend morning anchor and weekday reporter, and Mary Smith, a new investigative reporter. Greg Funderburg started as a weekend evening co-anchor and weekday reporter in January.
However, one of the station’s top leaders is leaving.
News director Ed Trauschke is retiring, departing from CBS 17 after seven years at the helm, The News & Observer previously reported. His last day there will be Friday, Dec. 20.
Assistant news director Derek Rowles will step into the news director position once Trauschke leaves.
