A CBS 17 reporter is leaving the station after nearly a decade.

Michael Hyland, who covered politics for the station, shared the news on social media.

“This was an incredibly difficult decision to make because in many ways this area has become like home,” Hyland wrote on X. “Having the opportunity to cover politics in this state has been a tremendous privilege and true joy in my career.”

After leaving CBS 17, Hyland will move to Georgia, where he will become assistant news director for the television station WTOC in Savannah.

“My family is really excited about what this will mean for us even as it means making a major change in our lives,” Hyland wrote on X.

CBS 17 has a national search underway for a replacement, a spokesperson for the station told The News & Observer.

Hyland grew up in Tennessee and worked as a journalist in Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania before joining CBS 17, according to his CBS 17 bio. He won an Emmy for his coverage of widespread drug use in the horse racing industry while in Pennsylvania.

Hyland is a graduate of George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where he studied journalism and mass communication.
