Raleigh’s all-day Fan Fest downtown Friday will likely kick off in rain, but the wet weather should end quickly in time for most of the free fun.
The event starts at 11 a.m. on Fayetteville Street, around the time showers are expected. The rain should continue as Gov. Roy Cooper sounds the siren at 11:45.
But ABC11 chief meteorologist Don “Big Weather” Schwenneker said the changing forecast shows rain moving out of Raleigh earlier and earlier, and by 2 or 3 p.m., it should stop altogether.
Regardless, the festival goes on rain or shine.
“The good thing is it’s not going to be a super cold rain,” he said. “It gets better as the event goes along, and it’s perfect weather for the game on Saturday.”
The Carolina Hurricanes play the Washington Capitals at 8 p.m. Saturday in Raleigh’s installment of the NHL Stadium Series, a series of outdoor hockey games.
Temperatures should be in the 40s, with clear skies by game time.
The game at Carter-Finley Stadium is preceded Friday by the Fan Fest, which is only mildly hockey-related, and involves a full day of free music, food trucks, a Ferris wheel and fireworks.
Downtown Raleigh is also hosting an outdoor watch party at 6 p.m. Saturday, including a big screen set up in Moore Square. There will be food vendors and beer for sale. Attendees should bring their own blankets and chairs.
