Three restaurants in the Raleigh area have closed recently.

Taco Bell and KFC, which shared a building on Six Forks Road at Millbrook Road in Raleigh, and Cary’s On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina have all shuttered.

On The Border has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and is closing stores across the United States, including the only Triangle restaurant. Three other On The Border locations in North Carolina (Charlotte, Concord and Fayetteville) remain open.

The restructuring will allow the company “to address several financial and operational challenges and emerge stronger and refocused on our growth,” Chris Rockwood, the restaurant’s president, said in a news release.

KFC and Taco Bell did not respond to The News & Observer’s request for more information about the store closures, but Reddit users have complained about service at the location.

Signs posted on the building at 5434 Six Forks Road point Taco Bell customers to a nearby location at 8801 Six Forks Road. KFC has two other Raleigh locations, one on Capital Boulevard and one on Poole Road.

But even as these national chains are closing locations, others are opening new Triangle stores.

Apex is getting its second Chick-fil-A. The restaurant known for chicken sandwiches will open at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 18 at 1001 S. Hughes St.

Customers can order food for dine-in, carry-out and delivery. The location, headed by franchise owner Tony Holmes, will also have drive-thru and “mobile thru” lanes (for people who order ahead using the Chick-fil-A app).

Another cookie place is opening in Raleigh. Crumbl, the chain known for its decadent sweet treats, opens Friday, March 21 at 2526 Hillsborough St., right across from N.C. State University.

This will be Raleigh’s fourth Crumbl, joining locations in North Raleigh, Brier Creek and Midtown.

It’s also the latest cookie company to open in the capital city recently. Insomnia Cookies, which also has a location on Hillsborough Street, opened a downtown Raleigh store late last year.

Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, Logan’s Garden Shop opened its new Raleigh location at the State Farmers Market.

The garden center sold indoor and outdoor plants, supplies and other products from a location in downtown Raleigh’s Seaboard Station for more than 30 years.

The store at 1208 Farmers Market Drive is just a few miles from the old location. But in a way, owner Joshua Logan told The N&O, the move is a kind of homecoming. His grandfather founded the business in 1965 at the old farmers market site, off Capital Boulevard.

“Three generations of my family have operated this business,” Logan said. “It just means so much to us. The public has loved and supported us for all these years. We’re grateful for the support that we continue to to have here.”

Customers will still find plants and gardening essentials at the store, but Logan’s has expanded its product line. Now, shoppers can browse items such as tools, pool supplies and outdoor recreation products.

Dose Yoga + Smoothie Bar is the latest business to sign on to join The Novus, a mixed-use skyscraper in downtown Durham.

Dose offers hot yoga classes, contrast therapy, smoothies and “wellness-driven foods.” The yoga and smoothie bar will be housed in the ground floor of The Novus, alongside Pilates studio Solidcore and the cycling studio Revel.

This will be Dose’s first Durham location and its third in the Triangle, adding to existing studios in downtown Raleigh and North Hills.

“We’ve built something really special in Raleigh, a space where people can move, connect, and prioritize their well-being in a welcoming, elevated environment,” Dose founder Emily Coules said in a news release. “Expanding to Durham, a city known for its vibrant culture and strong sense of community, feels like the perfect next step.”

An anticipated opening date for Dose Yoga + Smoothie Bar’s Durham location has not yet been announced.

Plato’s Closet opens new Triangle location

Plato’s Closet, a resale store specializing in teen and young-adult clothing, will open a new location in Holly Springs.

Owned by Katherine and Mike Ogle, the store at 7232 GB Alford Highway debuts Thursday, March 20. This store at the Shoppes at Holly Springs shopping center joins several other Plato’s Closet locations in the Triangle, including in Raleigh, Durham and Cary.

“There’s something for every young adult and every occasion,” Katherine Ogle said in a news release. “We want to show that clothing and accessories can be reused and upcycled, giving them a second life instead of being discarded.”

Grand opening events are scheduled throughout the location’s opening weekend. Find details at platoscloset.com.
