Logan’s Garden Shop is back at the North Carolina State Farmers Market after 60 years.

The family-owned garden center, which started in 1965 at the old farmers market site off Capital Boulevard, recently opened its new store at 1208 Farmers Market Drive. Logan’s spent the past 30-odd years about 3 miles away in downtown Raleigh’s Seaboard Station area.

“We’re kind of coming back to our roots in a way,” third-generation owner Joshua Logan told The News & Observer in an interview.

Facing and anticipating challenges caused by new, high-density development, the garden center sold its property at 707 Semart Drive in 2021, The N&O previously reported.

“We are selling the Seaboard Station property to explore how to best adapt our business model to adjust for the growth that we’ve experienced, improve the customer experience, and create a sustainable business model for the future,” the Logan family said then, in a written statement to customers.

Opening the new Logan’s Garden Shop

Logan’s, which was not the only business to leave Seaboard Station in recent years, announced in 2024 its decision to move to the farmers market, planning a January 2025 opening. That timeline was delayed.

The process to move to the farmers market began in late February. While the site most recently housed the home and garden store Market Imports, it was originally built for Logan’s Garden Shop, Logan said. His father, Robert Logan Jr., decided to move the business downtown, “closer to the action,” rather than following the farmers market to its current site.

The new store quietly opened on Saturday, March 8, shortly before the Saturday, March 15 date that the company previously shared.

“The weather’s been so pleasant that we decided just go ahead and soft open and let people come in, and they’ve been flooding in, getting their spring stuff,” he said.

Still, because the business ended up liquidating as much inventory as possible before the move, Logan’s was still receiving merchandise deliveries as of Thursday, March 13.

A grand opening, complete with promotions, snacks and door prizes, is planned for Friday, March 28 and Saturday, March 29.

“Three generations of my family have operated this business,” Logan said. “It just means so much to us. The public has loved and supported us for all these years. We’re grateful for the support that we continue to to have here.”

While the new location may be less convenient for shoppers who live in downtown Raleigh, Logan said, the farmers market site is right off Interstate 40. This may increase access for people who live in other places throughout the Triangle, or people who want to avoid traffic, construction and road closures that can make navigating downtown a hassle.

“We believe a lot of folks will find that coming to Logan’s now offers them a chance to not only enjoy our store, but all the other great vendors that are here,” Logan said.

New layout at the farmers market location

Construction at the farmers market site (which has less acreage than the downtown store but about the same amount of retail space) started during the second half of 2024.

  • Outside the octagonal building, which is adjacent to the State Farmers Market Restaurant, Logan’s regraded the property to make it level. Otherwise, pushing wheeled objects like carts, strollers or wheelchairs would have been too difficult.
  • The garden center also poured concrete walking paths to allow shoppers to more easily navigate the outdoor space and added shade structures to provide relief from the sun.
  • A new driveway closer to the store was added so Logan’s team members — a “small army” of around 90 during the company’s busiest time (typically around Mother’s Day), though not all on site at once — can assist customers load their vehicles.
  • The three-decade-old, nonfunctional greenhouses were rebuilt, with modern climate controls installed to help keep the spaces more comfortable.
  • There’s a new perimeter fence.
  • Inside the building — where Logan’s stocks items including hoses, seeds, plant food, orchids and weed killer — the company removed dividers to make the room more open and upgraded lighting throughout.

Logan’s signed a decade-long lease with options for two 10-year renewals for the farmers market site.

“It’s our hope and expectation to be here for at least the next 30 years,” Logan said.

Loyal Logan’s Garden Shop customers will see new items for sale at the store.

The garden shop now carries tools of all kinds — everything from screwdrivers and wrenches to battery-powered power tools — outdoor recreation products and pool supplies.

“We’re trying to make a convenient one-stop option so folks can gather everything they want and need for their weekend projects,” Logan said.
