A home break-in erupted in gunfire when neighbors got suspicious and went next door to challenge an intruder, according to investigators in North Carolina.

It happened just before 11 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13, at a rural home northwest of Grover, and the suspect escaped, the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

“The homeowner went outside after noticing lights on in an adjacent home that was being remodeled. The homeowner was aware that the lights shouldn’t be on and suspected a breaking and entering,” the sheriff’s office said.

“Upon confronting the male suspect, the male suspect shot at the homeowner. ... A neighbor heard the gunshots and came out to check on the commotion. The neighbor also encountered a male subject. The neighbor shot at the male after it appeared to him that the male was preparing to shoot at him.”

The shot prompted the suspect to run, and he was last seen driving away in an Audi, the sheriff’s office said.

“Currently, we don’t have confirmation that anyone was injured,” officials said. “The matter is still under investigation, and a search for the occupants of the Audi continues.”

Grover is about a 40-mile drive southwest from uptown Charlotte, along the South Carolina state line.
