One person was killed and another was wounded when shots were fired during a fireworks display for the Fourth of July, according to investigators in North Carolina.

It happened just after midnight on Friday, July 5, in the 2700 block of East Lexington Avenue in High Point, police said in a news release. High Point is about an 80-mile drive northeast from Charlotte.

“A large crowd was in the parking lot for (an) unofficial fireworks show. Upon arrival, officers located two gun shot victims and began to render aid,” High Point police said.

“One victim received non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, N.C. ... The other victim ... was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C., in critical condition.”

Keith S. Lynch, 32, of High Point died at the hospital, officials said. The identity of the other victim and his condition have not been released.

The shooting occurred near a strip mall west of Interstate 74. Investigators suspect the shots were fired from four-lane East Lexington Avenue.

“Multiple shell casings were located in the roadway,” police said. “The shell casings will be examined to determine the number of casings recovered and the calibers.”

No suspect has been identified and no arrests have been made, officials said.
