A 73-year-old died after crashing into a pier during an afternoon boating trip in North Carolina, officials said.

Around 2:40 p.m. Saturday, March 19, the boat slammed into a pier in the Tar River Reservoir, the Rocky Mount Police Department said in a news release. The driver, identified as John McManus, was thrown overboard.

First responders were called to the reservoir, and McManus was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to police.

Police had not released any other information as of Sunday, March 20. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is leading an investigation into the crash.

The Tar River Reservoir is located “on the confluence of the Tar River and Sapony Creek,” according to the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality. It’s open for fishing and boating.

Rocky Mount is about 60 miles northeast of Raleigh.
