Teacher wins $100 in NC lottery — but that was just the start to a lucky week

A North Carolina middle school teacher won $100 in the lottery, and she didn’t have to wait long to snag a bigger prize.

The next day, Nancy Kelly discovered her husband bought a scratch-off ticket worth $100,000, the N.C. Education Lottery said last week in a news release.

Kelly, a physical education teacher and coach at East Burke Middle School in Western North Carolina, first tried her luck with a ticket that ended up winning $100 on Sept. 21, the news release said.

“Every now and then, if I get a feeling, I pick up a ticket,” she told officials.

The next day, the lucky streak continued with a trip to The Ole Store in Rhodhiss, a town roughly 60 miles northwest of Charlotte.

That’s where her husband Dean saw a lottery sign that caught his eye, prompting him to buy one ticket for the $150 Million Cash Explosion game, officials say.

“He picks them out and I scratch them,” Nancy told the lottery.

At home, she screamed when she found out they won big.

“She’s always been lucky,” Dean, who coaches with his wife, said in the lottery’s news release. “That’s why I don’t mind that she scratches.”

The couple, who lives in Hickory, got to keep $70,756 after taxes. Though they aren’t sure how they will spend the money, Dean has a dream of bringing their sons to California to see his favorite sports teams, according to officials.
