These cities in the Carolinas are among trendiest Labor Day destinations, Airbnb says

The Carolinas are home to three of the top Labor Day travel destinations in the country, new rankings show.

Hilton Head Island and Charleston, South Carolina, join Wilmington, North Carolina, on Airbnb’s list of trendiest places to visit for the holiday weekend, according to a list released Tuesday.

The cities earned recognition after boasting the highest jumps in year-over-year bookings, the vacation rental website told McClatchy News in an email.

People are expected to flock to the destinations despite the coronavirus pandemic, which hit Southeastern states hard in recent months. As COVID-19 continues to spread, health officials say staying home offers the best protection against the disease.

Nationwide, 77% of people in a recent survey say they don’t trust people to practice social distancing responsibly during the holiday weekend, McClatchy News reported.

This Labor Day, Airbnb says it has seen a rise in people seeking remote destinations. Trips to those locations have been booked almost twice as much as they were at this time in 2019, according to the company.

Interest in cabins also is up for the holiday weekend, with bookings more than doubling from year to year. People are increasingly putting cabins and other “unique stays” on their Airbnb wish lists, too, the company said in its news release.

In August, two Western North Carolina accommodations were listed among the website’s most desired: a treehouse in Old Fort and a “glamping dome” in Hendersonville.

To come up with its findings, Airbnb says it examined booking and search data from Aug. 1 to 23.

In addition to the three destinations in the Carolinas, places that are growing in popularity for Labor Day travelers include Big Bear Lake, California; Lake Havasu City, Arizona; Scranton, Pennsylvania; Palm Springs, California; Orange Beach, Alabama; Pigeon Forge, Tennessee; and Fredericksburg, Texas, the news release said.
