A rare, ancient amulet with biblical ties was recently unearthed in Turkey.

The metal artifact — which is about the size of a large coin — depicts a dramatic battle sequence and carries a brief inscription.

It was discovered by archaeologists from Karabük University in Hadrianopolis, a city near the Black Sea that dates to the Roman period, according to a Nov. 14 university news release.

The amulet, which would have been worn as a necklace, dates to the fifth century A.D., making it at least 1,500 years old.

On one side, there is an etching of Solomon, a biblical king, seated on a horse and attacking the devil with a spear.

According to the Bible, Solomon was the son of King David and was credited with constructing the first temple in Jerusalem. He is also mentioned in the Torah and the Quran.

Surrounding the scene is an inscription that, translated into English, reads: “Our Lord defeated evil.”

Additionally, inscribed on the back of the amulet are the names of four angels: Michael, Gabriel, Israfil and Azrail.

The artifact is considered to be a very important discovery, according to the release. Prior to its finding, only one other similar depiction had been uncovered in Jerusalem.

Further, its presence in Hadrianopolis is believed to correspond to the city’s military significance. Prior excavations revealed that a cavalry unit once occupied the city. These horseback fighters likely thought of Solomon as a protective figure, according to the release.

In addition to its military ties, the city is also renowned for its rich archaeological record.

Multiple well-preserved mosaics — including some depicting religious figures and animals — have been discovered within its ancient churches. The remains of tombs, baths and defensive structures have also been found.
