Boaters in Western Australia spotted a baby sea creature on a recent tour — and it may have even struck a pose, too.

All Sea Charters Whale Watching said its Nov. 1 morning charter spotted a whale calf exhibiting “very rare behavior,” according to a Nov. 2 Facebook post.

Photos show the baby with its mouth open at the surface of the water.

“Almost like it’s posing for us,” the tour agency captioned the photos.

“Just saying hi!” one person commented on the post.

Whales near Australia migrate north starting in May and June, and begin their southbound journey between August and November, according to Australia’s National Parks and Wildlife Services blog.

The agency did not say why the calf had its mouth open, but whales open their mouths at the surface for a number of feeding techniques, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. One technique is lunge feeding, when whales use a “burst of speed” to catch a mouthful of prey at the surface.
