Cinemark is inviting moviegoers to bring their own buckets to fill with hot, buttery popcorn.

The “Bring Your Own Bucket” day event kicks off Sunday, Jan. 19, at participating Cinemark locations nationwide on National Popcorn Day, according to the Texas-based theater chain.

For $5, customers can fill up their choice of container, Cinemark said. No movie ticket purchase is required.

“As long as the container is clean and does not exceed 400 ounces, Cinemark will fill it to the brim with crisp, freshly popped kernels,” according to a news release.

Moviegoers without a custom container can get a $5 extra large popcorn at the concession stand, Cinemark said.

The origins of National Popcorn Day aren’t exactly clear, though the annual holiday honoring the popular snack has been celebrated since 2003, Cinemark’s website says.

Citing 2016-2020 sales data, The Popcorn Board reported that Americans scarf down an average 14 billion quarts of the grain every year, with home consumption peaking in the fall.

Cinemark dubbed National Popcorn Day as “one of the best days of the year” for fans of the classic snack food.

“Popcorn has always been the star of movie theater concessions,” David Haywood, senior vice president of food and beverage for Cinemark, said in the release. “We are excited for everyone to get creative with this campaign and show off their choice of container while enjoying the iconic snack alongside a great film.”
