Runaway plane crashes through fence and into road after landing, Georgia officials say
A plane crash closed a Georgia road on Sunday, officials say.
The small plane landed at Daniel Field Airport in Augusta at about 2:15 p.m. but was unable to stop, according to a tweet from Augusta Fire and Emergency Management.
It crashed through a wire fence and then rolled across Highland Avenue, the tweet said. Officials have closed the road until the plane can be moved.
The pilot was conscious and taken to the hospital with minor injuries, Augusta Fire and EMA says. He was the only person on board, Augusta Aviation said in a statement to WJBF, and his name had not been released by later Sunday afternoon.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating, the tweet says.
It’s unclear why the plane couldn’t stop after “touching down on the runway,” Augusta Aviation said in a statement to WRDW.
The airport staff has permission to move the plane back to Daniel Field, the statement says, according to WJBF.
