Confronting a campus crisis

The deaths of five NC State students sound the alarm for mental health care and suicide prevention. Is the university doing enough?

Expand All

North Carolina State University has encountered several student deaths this year, including five deaths by suicide.

The university set up a Student Mental Health Task Force in November to address student and staff concerns; examine strategies, policies and programs in place; and develop recommendations to improve and create new ones.

On Tuesday, Feb. 21, the university released its report and its findings.

“The Task Force recognizes there are several short-term actions that can help improve mental health support on campus. However, a number of recommended initiatives will take sustained, ongoing commitment over time to help achieve the mental health outcomes we strive for at NC State,” the report says.

Here is a summary of the report that includes numerous short- and long-term recommendations and outlines the “institutional-level commitment” necessary to implement them.
