Wake, Triangle school districts announce Tuesday delays, cancellations. What we know.

Many Triangle school districts, including Wake and Durham, will operate on two-hour delays Tuesday due to icy weather.

Wake, Durham, Chapel Hill-Carrboro, Franklin and Chatham announced two-hour delays for staff and students Monday night, the same day snow flurries and ice brought the post-winter return to school to a halt.

Orange County canceled in-person and remote learning classes Monday evening, district officials said on its website.

Wake and Durham counties stayed open Monday, inducing ire from some parents.

Road conditions are expected to be hazardous Tuesday morning, as water freezes on the roads overnight. Orange County also has thousands still without power, including some of the district’s school buildings, Orange County officials said. Power could be restored to those schools sometime on Tuesday, they said.

The News & Observer will update this list as school districts make their decisions.

Wake County

WCPSS officials advise parents to check www.wcpss.net in the morning for updates as they assess road conditions to determine bus schedules.

The two-hour delay means before-school programs will be delayed or closed. The City of Raleigh will send out information about the programs they run. Principals will decide whether to serve breakfast.

Durham County

Durham Public Schools said the two-hour delay doesn’t apply to year-round schools, which are still on a winter break and are scheduled to return Wednesday. Before-school programs will be delayed by two hours.

Chapel Hill-Carrboro

Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools announced a two-hour delay, which “will allow most employees and students to head to work/school safely in daylight” and give staff time to check for any “lingering issues,” according to the district’s website.

Orange County

The district also canceled all on-campus activities, including after-school care, driver’s education and athletics on Tuesday.

“Due to continued power outages..., anticipated black ice with extended below freezing temperatures through at least mid-day tomorrow and hazardous travel conditions on secondary roads, all OCS schools and buildings will be closed Tuesday,” the district posted on its website.

Franklin County

The school district will operate on a two-hour delay for both staff and students.

Chatham County

A sharp change in the weather Monday delayed the post-holiday return to school in many North Carolina districts Monday. Heavy rain and wind on Sunday night gave way to ice and snow Monday morning.

While much of the frozen precipitation disappeared by afternoon Monday, the temperature remained near freezing after a roughly 20-degree drop. More chilly weather is forecast for the rest of the week.
