A Triangle hospital made U.S. News & World Report’s list of the 20 best hospitals in the country.

Duke University Hospital in Durham is on the publication’s Best Hospitals Honor Roll, and it’s the only North Carolina hospital to make the list.

“We are grateful to our team members who work each and every day to compassionately care for our patients, their loved ones, and each other,” Duke University Health System officials said in a statement emailed to The News & Observer. “This recognition, and the many other awards and accolades we receive each year, celebrates the quality care and incredible patient experience our patients have come to expect from Duke University Health System.”

How is the ranking created?

U.S. News & World Report rates hospitals in 20 procedures and conditions, including knee replacement, heart bypass surgery and gynecological cancer surgery, along with 15 areas of complex specialty care. Ratings are based on patient outcomes and other factors, such as patient experience and hospital staffing.

Points are assigned based on rankings of the 15 specialties and 20 procedures and conditions; the more specialties and higher a hospital’s rank, the more points are given. The hospitals with the most points make the Honor Roll.
