Walgreens is closing another Raleigh location.

The pharmacy giant, which has closed at least four stores in Raleigh and Durham since March, is shuttering about 1,200 locations across the United States.

Walgreens has previously cited “a challenging U.S. retail environment” and “net reimbursement pressure” as reasons for the brick-and-mortar closures.

Here’s what to know about the forthcoming store closure.

Walgreens closing in Raleigh

According to the retailer’s website, the store at 1601 Cross Link Road in Raleigh is closing Monday, Aug. 18.

Anyone who gets prescriptions filled at that location can make changes to their preferred pharmacy at walgreens.com. There are nearly 100 Walgreens locations in the Triangle, according to the company’s website.

Recent Walgreens closures in the Triangle

The Cross Link Road store is the latest Triangle location to shut down.

  • In late June, Walgreens closed its stores at 4309 Wake Forest Road in Raleigh and at 1505 Broad St. in Durham.
  • And in March, the Raleigh store at 8385 Creedmoor Road and the Durham location at 710 Fayetteville St. shuttered.

The company previously told The News & Observer that “increased regulatory and reimbursement pressures are weighing on our ability to cover the costs associated with rent, staffing, and supply needs.”

Closing retail stores is just one way Walgreens is trying to cut costs.

“In fiscal 2025, we are focusing on stabilizing the retail pharmacy by optimizing our footprint, controlling operating costs, improving cash flow, and continuing to address reimbursement models to support dispensing margins and preserve patient access for the future,” Tim Wentworth, CEO of Walgreens Boots Alliance, said in an October earnings report.

Pharmacy closures

Walgreens is not the only pharmacy to close retail stores.

In its 2024 annual report, released in February 2025, CVS Health said it would close 271 stores nationwide this year, including at least one in Fayetteville, according to The Fayetteville Observer.

Hundreds of independent pharmacies have closed, too, The N&O previously reported, because of a drop in prescription reimbursements by insurance plans and pharmacy benefit managers.
