Oakwood Pizza Box expands by taking over decades-old Raleigh pizzeria spot
For more than 30 years, Capital Creations was one of Raleigh’s most beloved spots for carryout pizza.
This summer, one of the Triangle’s very best pizzerias will give it a new life.
The old Capital Creations at 1842 Wake Forest Road in Raleigh will become a carryout-only version of Oakwood Pizza Box, the wildly popular Person Street pizzeria owned by Anthony Guerra.
Capital Creations closed in 2023 after more than 30 years in business as one of Raleigh’s most cherished pizza traditions.
Guerra, whose Pizza Box is one of the Triangle’s most cherished pizzas of today, said the move aims to rekindle some pizza magic in a familiar place.
“What’s a really cool idea to me, (Capital Creations) had it for 30 years, I have a 30-year lease,” Guerra said in a phone interview. “You could have only two pizza spots running it for 60 years. That’s a really cool thought to me. That’s something that drew me to that space. Its history is everything.”
Oakwood Pizza Box opened in a narrow space on Person Street in 2017, serving Brooklyn-style pizzas with simple stylings and grand ambitions. Today it’s so popular that Guerra laments that sometimes customers have to wait an hour and a half on Friday nights for a carry-out pizza.
“It’s a 10/10 hard and I don’t want it to be a 10/10 hard,” Guerra said. “If you’re going to just bring a pizza home you shouldn’t have to park two miles away, dodge traffic in the crosswalk. There should just be a way to just get a pizza.”
The new Oakwood Pizza Box will have ample parking for folks picking up pizzas, plus more capacity. Like the original Oakwood Pizza Box, third party delivery service DoorDash will handle delivery.
While the menu will be to-go only, Guerra said there will be a wine program for diners to talk home bottles.
There will also be a private dining space in the back.
“We get asked all the time if we can do buy-outs at Pizza Box and we just can’t rent it out,” Guerra said. “The new private dining room, that will be where we can really play around.”
The new carryout Oakwood Pizza Box aims to open in early August.
By that time, Guerra also hopes to have his other Raleigh project up and running, the wine bar St. Pierre at Raleigh Iron Works.
