The restaurant pipeline between Raleigh and Wilmington remains strong, as another spot from the coast is jumping into the Triangle.

Specializing in fish tacos and margaritas, the coastal Mexican restaurant K38 Baja Grill will expand to Raleigh for the first time with a new location in Seaboard Station.

K38 Baja Grill opened in Wilmington in 1993 and has expanded to five locations around the city and surrounding beaches, growing into something of a coastal institution.

“We’re excited to bring our coastal vibe to the capital,” said Brian Brennan, president of Live.Eat.Surf Restaurants in a press release. “Our goal is to create a relaxed yet vibrant space where everyone—from families to surf enthusiasts — can come together, enjoy great food, and experience the essence of the beach, right here in the city.”

The beach vibes are strong at K38, which takes its name from a famous surfing spot in Baja California known as Kilometer 38.

The brand was launched by influential Wilmington restaurant owner Josh Voch, who passed away in 2019 after growing K38 to seven locations at that time.

Raleigh’s K38 will be the latest restaurant to join the quickly growing Seaboard Station, a longtime restaurant district currently in the midst of a redevelopment.

K38 is best known for beer-battered fish tacos and a seabreeze vibe. Other taco highlights include grilled shrimp, jerk-rubbed tuna and blackened mahi.

On the drinks side there are nine different kinds of margaritas, from basic house, prickly pear and cucumber mezcal. Yes, they can all be ordered by the pitcher.

The Raleigh K38 is slated to open in September 2025.
