Triangle restaurant gets ‘B’ for moldy ice scoop & dirty pans: Sanitation scores (Dec. 17)
The News & Observer publishes a weekly roundup of restaurant sanitation scores to keep you up-to-date on the health grades at Triangle dining spots.
Sanitation scores and their corresponding letter grades are used in North Carolina to assess restaurants’ adherence to rules and standards intended to mitigate and prevent the spread of food-borne illnesses.
You’ve likely seen sanitation grade cards at restaurants you’ve visited, and The N&O previously explained what those scores mean and how they’re calculated.
Here are sanitation scores in Triangle counties for the week of Dec. 10-16.
Wake County sanitation scores
The Wake County inspection management system shows that 91 restaurant inspections were completed Dec. 10-16.
All restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.

Durham County sanitation scores
The Durham County inspection management system shows 32 restaurant inspections were completed Dec. 10-16.
Most restaurants received an A grade.
Two restaurants received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.
Beau & Kales Backyard BBQ (5122 NC-55 in Durham) received a score of 88% during an inspection on Dec. 10.
The restaurant was in violation of 16 standards.
Violations included heavy food debris build up on food thermometers, an employee seen without hair restraint while preparing food and sewage backing up onto floor in the dish area.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection.
The restaurant previously scored 94.5% in May.
El Mariachi Restaurante (2000 Avondale Dr. in Durham) received a score of 82% during an inspection on Dec. 13.
The restaurant was in violation of 25 standards.
Violations included repackaged raw beef above cooked meats and vegetables in a freezer, a staff member mixing masa without gloves and a large pot of beans under prep table cooling since the night before at room temperature.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection.
The restaurant previously scored 99% in July and 98% in January.

Orange County sanitation scores
The Orange County inspection management system shows that 15 restaurant inspections were completed Dec. 10-16.
All restaurants received an A grade.

Johnston County sanitation scores
The Johnston County inspection management system shows that nine restaurant inspections were completed Dec. 10-16.
All restaurants received an A grade.

Chatham County sanitation scores
The Chatham County inspections management system shows that seven restaurant inspections were completed Dec. 10-16.
Most restaurants received an A grade.
Two restaurants received a B grade.
Guanajuato Mexican Restaurant (11552 US 15501 N Suite 205 in Chapel Hill) received a score of 88.5% during an inspection on Dec. 16.
The restaurant was in violation of 12 standards.
Violations included raw bacon stored above ready-to-eat foods in the walk-in cooler, sliced tomatoes, guacamole, lamb, salsa, frozen spinach and shredded cheddar cheese warmer than necessary temperature. Several wet wiping cloths were also seen laying around food prep areas.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection.
The restaurant previously scored 96.5% in July and 97.5% in February.
Sky Mart (5875 Old US 1 Hwy in New Hill), a gas station with an attached restaurant, received a score of 86% during an inspection on Dec. 11.
The restaurant was in violation of nine standards.
Violations included sliced tomatoes, sliced cheese, and a gallon of milk found with no date mark, multiple metal food pans with food debris in clean storage and ice scoop found with mold.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection.
The restaurant previously scored 91.5% in September and 92.5% in June.
