These 2 Triangle restaurants were holding week-old food: Sanitation scores (Oct. 29)
The News & Observer publishes a weekly roundup of restaurant sanitation scores to keep you up-to-date on the health grades at Triangle dining spots.
Sanitation scores and their corresponding letter grades are used in North Carolina to assess restaurants’ adherence to rules and standards intended to mitigate and prevent the spread of food-borne illnesses.
You’ve likely seen sanitation grade cards at restaurants you’ve visited, and The N&O previously explained what those scores mean and how they’re calculated.
Here are sanitation scores in Triangle counties for the week of Tuesday, Oct. 22 to Monday, Oct. 28.
Wake County sanitation scores
The Wake County inspection management system shows that 81 restaurant inspections were completed Oct. 22-28.
Most restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.
Three restaurants received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.
Another Broken Egg Cafe (160 Park at N. Hills St Ste 127 in Raleigh) received a score of 81.5% during an inspection on Friday, Oct. 25.
The restaurant was in violation of 14 standards. Of these, seven were considered critical violations.
Critical violations included pumpkin waffle batter, ranch dressing, low country sauce, Veloute sauce, chicken and chorizo all held beyond seven days.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection.
The restaurant previously scored 93.5% in April and 93% in December 2023.
Chilango (2253 New Hope Church Rd. in Raleigh) received a score of 88.5% during an inspection on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
The restaurant was in violation of 10 standards. Of these, seven were considered critical violations.
Critical violations included pickled jalapenos, carrots and salsa verde were held beyond seven days in the walk-in cooler. Brisket and several containers of salsa were also held above 41F in coolers.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection.
The restaurant previously scored 93.5% in May and 91% in January.
IHOP (3009 Capital Blvd. in Raleigh) received a score of 88% during an inspection on Monday, Oct. 28.
The restaurant was in violation of 13 standards. Of these, four were considered critical violations.
Critical violations included several dirty food containers and glassware found with food debris, lipstick stains and residue being stored as clean.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection.
The restaurant previously scored 88.5% on Wednesday, Oct. 16 and 91.5% in June.

Durham County sanitation scores
The Durham County inspection management system shows 22 restaurant inspections were completed Oct. 22-28.
All restaurants received an A grade.

Orange County sanitation scores
The Orange County inspection management system shows that 21 restaurant inspections were completed Oct. 22-28.

Johnston County sanitation scores
According to a spokesperson for Johnston County, five food service establishment inspections were completed the week of Oct. 21-25.
All restaurants received an A grade.
Note: A spokesperson for Johnston County confirmed to The News & Observer that their team is in the process of transitioning to a different inspection software than the one previously used (johnston-nc.health inspections.us), which is currently down.
Chatham County sanitation scores
The Chatham County inspections management system shows that no restaurant inspections were completed Oct. 22-28.
