Triangle restaurant earns another ‘B’ for improper raw food storage: Scores (Oct. 22)
The News & Observer publishes a weekly roundup of restaurant sanitation scores to keep you up-to-date on the health grades at Triangle dining spots.
Sanitation scores and their corresponding letter grades are used in North Carolina to assess restaurants’ adherence to rules and standards intended to mitigate and prevent the spread of food-borne illnesses.
You’ve likely seen sanitation grade cards at restaurants you’ve visited, and The N&O previously explained what those scores mean and how they’re calculated.
Here are sanitation scores in Triangle counties for the week of Oct. 15-21.
Wake County sanitation scores
The Wake County inspection management system shows that 67 restaurant inspections were completed Oct. 15-21.
Most restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.
Three restaurants received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.
Anjappar Chettinad Indian Restaurant (101 Ledgestone Way in Cary) received a score of score of 88.5% during an inspection on Tuesday, Oct. 15.
The restaurant was in violation of 13 standards. Of these, five were considered critical violations.
Critical violations included several foods found at the wrong temperature, including onion sauce, goat, chicken, boiled vegetables, cheese, marinated fish, rabbit, heavy cream and mint sauce.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection and the restaurant later scored 90% on Oct. 21.
The restaurant previously scored 91% in 2024 and 92% in July 2023.
IHOP (3009 Capital Blvd. in Raleigh) received a score of 88.5% during an inspection on Wednesday, Oct. 16.
The restaurant was in violation of 13 standards. Of these, three were considered critical violations.
Critical violations included employees seen dropping food on the floor, picking it up to discard but did not wash their hands before putting new gloves on, and a few dirty food containers and glassware were being stored as clean.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection.
The restaurant previously scored 91.5% in June and 88% in May.
StarBar (1731 Trawick Rd. in Raleigh) received a score of 88% during an inspection on Thursday, Oct. 17.
The restaurant was in violation of 17 standards. Of these, eight were considered critical violations.
Critical violations included raw chicken stored above raw pork and gravy at a steam table 12 degrees colder than appropriate temperature.
Some violations were corrected during the inspection.
The restaurant previously scored 85% in February and 92.5% in May 2023.

Durham County sanitation scores
The Durham County inspection management system shows 27 restaurant inspections were completed Oct. 15-21.
All restaurants received an A grade.

The Orange County inspection management system shows that 21 restaurant inspections were completed Oct. 15-21.

The Johnston County sanitation inspections database shows that 30 restaurant inspections were completed Oct. 15-21.
All restaurants received an A grade.
