Legendary NYC dumpling shop + 2 other restaurants coming to Raleigh’s Hillsborough St.
A legendary New York dumpling shop is bringing its fast-casual off-shoot to Raleigh.
A trio of new restaurants are opening in the new Uncommon apartment building on Hillsborough Street near the NC State campus, a development that replaced the former East Village Grill & Bar.
The new restaurants are Nan Xiang Express, which specializes in soup dumplings, Tsao-Cha, a bubble tea and fried chicken bar, and Chex Grill & Wings.
East Village Grill closed in 2019 as the property was sold and redeveloped for student housing.
When is Nan Xiang Express opening in Raleigh?
Nan Xiang Express is a fast-casual spinoff of New York City’s Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao that was a recommended soup dumpling shop in the Michelin guide from 2009 to 2017.
The brand’s first North Carolina location opened in Durham this summer, serving pork, beef, chicken and crab and pork soup dumplings, plus dim sum, noodles and fried rice dishes.
So far there are only eight Nan Xiang Express locations in the country, including five in New York, two in Boston and one in Durham. Five more locations are planned, including Philadelphia, Houston, Lawrenceville, NJ and Raleigh’s.
The Raleigh location’s opening date is unknown.
Bubble tea + wing shop coming to Hillsborough Street
▪ Tsao-Cha is a bubble tea shop with numerous locations across the country, including a soon-to-open spot in Durham. The menu features a wide-ranging variety of milk teas, fruit teas, smoothies and milkshakes.
On the food side, Tsao-Cha serves Korean fried chicken, wings and chicken sandwiches, plus snacks like fried French Toast sticks, Korean corn dogs, egg waffles, dumplings and desserts.
▪ Chex Grill & Wings is a Charlotte-based wing shop that launched in 2014. Now there are 15 locations in and around Charlotte and Rock Hill, SC. Raleigh will be Chex Grill’s first expansion into the Triangle.
Wings are the specialty at Chex grill, featuring more than 40 different sauces and rubs, ranging from lemon pepper and Cajun to sweet and spicy combinations like strawberry hot and Hawaiian Jerk. Chex also serve Philly-style cheesesteaks, salads, wraps and burgers.
