NC playoff update: Providence baseball blows out Myers Park, heads to state finals

The NCHSAA regional baseball and softball series are underway, and girls’ soccer and lacrosse playoffs are nearing the regional rounds.

State finals will be held next week. Scroll down for updated scores and schedules.

Providence beats Myers Park, heads to state finals

Providence High is heading to the state finals again.

The Panthers, who have won three state titles, beat Myers Park, 6-0, Friday to advance.

The NCHSAA Western Regional championship was played in Gastonia.

Providence (30-1) won its 29th straight game. The Panthers haven't lost since Feb. 28. That streak includes a 9-6 win over Myers Park (24-6) in Game 1 of the western regional series, which was best-of-3.

Providence will play Corinth Holders (22-5) in a best-of-3 series for the state title next week. Corinth Holders beat Leesville Road in the Eastern Regional championship series.

Marvin Ridge advances to 7A state championship series

Marvin Ridge baseball is going back to the NCHSAA championship series.

The Mavericks beat Hickory Ridge, 4-0, in a deciding Game 2 of the N.C. 7A Western Regional championship game. Marvin Ridge (22-10) will play Holly Springs (24-5) in the state finals after starting the season 0-3 after losses to Providence, Ardrey Kell and Sun Valley.

Marvin Ridge finished third in the Southern Carolinas conference, behind Charlotte Catholic and Cuthbertson, but the Mavericks have gotten hot in the playoffs and are back in the championship round.

Marvin Ridge will make its fourth finals appearance. The Mavericks won back-to-back N.C. 3A state championships in 2015 and 2016 under former Independence High coach Mark Mennitt. Marvin Ridge lost in the finals in their most recent appearance, in 2019.

Myers Park soccer stops Hough

Myers Park’s girls soccer team shut out Hough, 2-0, Thursday night in Cornelius to advance to the NCHSAA 8A state championship game next week. The state finals will be held at Durham County Memorial Stadium May 28-30.

Cailin Whitlock and Amaya Falzarano scored for the Mustangs (18-2-3), who won their 10th straight game. Next up, Myers Park will try to win its first state championship since the 2021 season.

Myers Park will play Wilmington’s Hoggard High in the final. Hoggard beat Raleigh Millbrook, 3-2, in the Eastern Regional championship game.

Palisades win CMS girls’ flag football championship

Palisades beat Butler and Berry at Bank of America Stadium Wednesday night to win the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ flag football championship.

Palisades won its semifinal, 12-7, over Butler and shut out Berry, 13-0, in the championship under the lights in Charlotte.

This was the fifth consecutive year that the Carolina Panthers hosted the flag football championship. Nine teams, representing the top finishers in the league, competed in the first round last week at J.C. Smith.

Butler, Palisades, Berry and Rocky River advanced to the semifinals at BofA Wednesday.

This season, 30 teams played in the league, representing CMS schools and Charlotte Catholic.

This will be the last year the championships are played in the spring. Earlier this month, the NCHSAA Board of Directors voted to make girls’ flag football an official sport to be played in the fall, beginning in the 2026-27 school year.

Following that vote, The David & Nicole Tepper Foundation announced a $1 million commitment to continue its support of girls high school flag football programs in North Carolina and South Carolina, which will provide grant funding directly to schools to support the continued growth and development of the sport in both states.

Girls’ soccer update

Myers Park advanced to the Class 8A girls’ state soccer championship by blanking top-seeded Hough 2-0 in the rain Thursday night. The Mustangs (18-2-3), seeded second in 8A West, will face perennial Wilmington power Hoggard (19-1-1) in next week’s state championship.

Thursday’s victory completed a big week for Myers Park, which trounced Northwest Guilford 6-1 on Monday.

Seven other area schools advanced to regional finals next Tuesday.

In Class 7A, Weddington continued a bit of a Cinderella run through the playoffs as a No. 6 seed. The Warriors upset No. 2 seeded Marvin Ridge 2-1. After entering the playoffs on a two-game losing streak, Weddington (14-7-1) has won four straight games and will play at top-seed R.J. Reynolds Tuesday.

In Class 6A, top-seeded Charlotte Catholic blanked Asheville 3-0 on Thursday. The Cougars (22-0-1) will host second seed Mount (19-0-2) in a battle of unbeatens Tuesday.

In Class 5A, fourth seed South Point (22-2-1) stunned previously unbeaten and top-seeded Northwest Cabarrus 5-1 on Wednesday. The Raiders will travel to No. 2 seed Hickory on Tuesday for the West regional crown.

In Class 4A, eighth-seeded Lake Norman Charter continued its improbable run, downing Ashe County 2-0 Thursday. The Knights (15-4-3), who have won two straight road playoff games, will travel again Tuesday, facing Hibriten for the West title.

In Class 3A, top seed Pine Lake Prep (18-3) continued its dominating playoff run with an 8-0 rout of Union Academy on Wednesday. The Pride, which has outscored postseason foes 21-1, hosts Hendersonville on Tuesday.

In Class 2A, fourth seed Christ the King improved to 16-4-1 with a 3-1 victory Thursday over top-seeded Bishop McGuinness. The Crusaders will face another area team, Mountain Island Charter, in Tuesday’s West Regional final. Mountain Island beat Community School of Davidson, 3-2, in its regional semifinal Friday.
