Hall of Fame baseball coach Pete Shankle dies
Pete Shankle, the Hall of Fame coach who led the baseball programs at a few Durham schools, died Friday morning after a battle with cancer, according to ABC11.
Shankle won 502 games as a coach at Southern Durham and most recently at Voyager Academy. The basketball stadium at Southern Durham is named after him.
In 2015, Shankle was inducted into the North Carolina Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He won 135 games at Voyager, where he started the baseball program and averaged 16.8 wins a year. He coached the Vikings to a 13-9 record last season.
Shankle also coached at Northern Durham and Jordan High School and was an athletic director at Southern Durham.
