Herman Boone, an N.C. Central hall of fame football coach and graduate, died Wednesday at 84, the school announced Wednesday afternoon.

Boone, a double graduate of NCCU, was portrayed by Denzel Washington in the 2000 film “Remember The Titans.”

A native of Rocky Mount, Boone coached at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Va. In 1971, when Virginia desegregated the school district, Boone took over during a hostile time and turned the team into one of the best high school programs in the country.

Under Boone, the Titans went 13-0, winning a Virginia state title and finishing No. 2 in the national polls. In 2004, Boone was inducted into the Alex M. Rivera NCCU Athletics Hall of Fame.

In March 2018, the basketball media room in N.C. Central’s McDougald-McLendon Arena was named after Boone.
