Herman Boone, NCCU grad portrayed by Denzel Washington in ‘Remember the Titans,’ dies
Herman Boone, an N.C. Central hall of fame football coach and graduate, died Wednesday at 84, the school announced Wednesday afternoon.
Boone, a double graduate of NCCU, was portrayed by Denzel Washington in the 2000 film “Remember The Titans.”
A native of Rocky Mount, Boone coached at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Va. In 1971, when Virginia desegregated the school district, Boone took over during a hostile time and turned the team into one of the best high school programs in the country.
Under Boone, the Titans went 13-0, winning a Virginia state title and finishing No. 2 in the national polls. In 2004, Boone was inducted into the Alex M. Rivera NCCU Athletics Hall of Fame.
In March 2018, the basketball media room in N.C. Central’s McDougald-McLendon Arena was named after Boone.
