North Carolina begins Year Two under coach Hubert Davis as the No. 1 ranked team in the nation.
The anticipation for this season already draws strong parallels to the 2016-17 “Redemption” season in which the Tar Heels singular focus was on winning the national championship after losing in the 2016 title game.
Carolina returned four starters from last season’s team that lost to Kansas in the national title game and was 90 seconds from winning it all. The Tar Heels’ journey to get back to the Final Four starts against UNC Wilmington.
Davis said on Friday that three of the players who missed the exhibition win over Elizabeth City State — R.J. Davis, Justin McKoy and Jalen Washington — were healthy and available to play. Forward Puff Johnson, who also missed the exhibition, will be a game-time decision.
The Seahawks are coached by former N.C. State assistant coach Takayo Siddle.
