No timeline yet for NC State quarterback Devin Leary to return. Latest on his injury

N.C. State quarterback Devin Leary, injured Saturday against Florida State, will not require surgery, coach Dave Doeren said Monday.

Doeren said Leary’s status will be “day to day” as he rehabs his right shoulder and said there is no timetable for his return.

“The good news is the shoulder is good and all damages were positive,” Doeren said Monday. “He was fortunate. A lot of times when you see a quarterback hit when he’s throwing it can be damaging, and this was not that.

“Devin’s super tough and he will grind. There isn’t a timeline. It could be this week, it could be six weeks. It’s really going to come down to how he recovers. We’re excited the news was what it was. We’re excited his season isn’t over and he doesn’t need surgery.”

Jack Chambers, a transfer from Charleston Southern, is expected to be the starter this week when the No. 15 Wolfpack plays at No. 18 Syracuse. Chambers came in for Leary against FSU and helped the Pack rally for a 19-17 victory at Carter-Finley Stadium.

Leary was injured in the third quarter Saturday when he was hit in the pocket by FSU’s Joshua Farmer as he released a pass. Farmer, who fell on Leary after the first contact, was flagged for roughing the passer.

Leary received medical attention on the field before being helped to the locker room. He later returned to the Wolfpack sideline with his right arm in a sling.

Doeren said after the game that Leary’s X-rays were negative and that Leary would have an MRI on Sunday.

“He’s in a good spot, mentally,” Doeren said. “He’s thankful to hear it wasn’t bad. Not that anything’s good, but it could have been a lot worse.

“He knows what he’s got to get done. He’ll be down there, he trusts the trainers we have and he’ll be after it. ... He’s going to try like heck to get ready. He’s got a lot to be motivated about in his recovery process.”

Doeren said Monday that receiver Devin Carter and running back Demie Sumo-Karngbaye, who both left the FSU game with injuries, would be good to go this week at Syracuse. Tight end Trent Pennix, out since the season opener at East Carolina, is close to returning -- ‘’Either this game or next,” Doeren said.

Doeren said defensive back Joshua Pierre-Louis had been suspended from the football team since before the Texas Tech game, saying the suspension is indefinite.
