Podcast: NC State, Dennis Smith Jr. and the FBI case: What does it all mean?
On April 10, the FBI released superseding indictments as part of its ongoing investigation into corruption in college basketball.
The new documents include information about how an adidas executive, Jim Gatto, worked with an adidas consultant to funnel $40,000 to the father of an N.C. State recruit, believed to be Dennis Smith Jr., as a way to get the younger Smith to go to N.C. State. The money was given by the consultant to an unnamed N.C. State basketball coach, who represented he was giving the money to Smith's father, Dennis Smith Sr., according to the indictment.
Dennis Smith Jr. and Dennis Smith Sr. are not named in the FBI's indictment.
Reporters Jonathan M. Alexander and Jonas Pope IV talk to N.C. State beat reporter Joe Giglio about what these documents mean and the possible penalties N.C. State could face, if any.
Also, late Tuesday morning, N.C. State chancellor Randy Woodson released a statement and gave a timeline of the school's response to the FBI's inquiry. Alexander and Pope talk to ACC enterprise reporter Chip Alexander about this latest revelation.
