NC State, Duke football will each host Notre Dame in a 2023 regular season game

The University of North Carolina football team got a crack at Notre Dame last season, and suffered its first loss of the season against the Irish, despite putting up 32 points, in a 45-32 setback.

In 2023, the Triangle’s two other Division I FBS programs will get a chance to succeed where the Tar Heels could not.

N.C. State and Duke will each host Notre Dame this fall, according to the Fighting Irish schedule released Wednesday, with the Wolfpack welcoming them to Carter-Finley Stadium on Sept. 9, and the Blue Devils playing host on Sept. 30.

The Pack is coming off a season it began with the highest of hopes, but in which it stumbled after injuries to key players and inconsistent play derailed its highest aspirations. N.C. State finished 8-5 in 2022, a season that culminated in a loss to Mryland of the Big 10 in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte.

The game against Notre Dame at Carter-Finley is the fourth announced game of the Wolfpack’s fall slate, which also includes a game at UConn on Sept. 2, and home games against VMI (Sept. 16) and Marshall (Oct. 7).

N.C. State has faced Notre Dame three times before, winning games in 2003 (the Gator Bowl on New Years Day) and 2016, and losing in 2017.

Duke, meanwhile, had one of the feel-good stories of the 2022 season. Picked to finish near the bottom of the ACC and coming off a pair of dreadful seasons, the Blue Devils turned things around in a big way under first-year head coach Mike Elko. They finished the season 9-4, and capped it with a 30-13 win over UCF in the Military Bowl.

The game against Notre Dame at Wallace-Wade Stadium on Sept. 30 is the fourth announced game of the Blue Devils’ fall schedule, as well. Duke will also host Lafayette (Sept. 9) and Northwestern (Sept. 16), and travel to UConn (Sept. 23).

The Blue Devils’ game against the Irish will be the teams’ eighth meeting, with Notre Dame leading the all-time series, 5-2. The Blue Devils’ wins came in 2016 in South Bend, Indiana, and in 1961, in Durham. The Irish won the most recent pair of meetings, in 2019 and 2020.
