The Citadel plans to play 4-game schedule. Clemson expected to be one opponent
Fall sports seasons are over for the Southern Conference, but two of the state’s three SoCon teams are still looking to play up to four non-conference football games in 2020.
Wofford is not expected to play football games this fall, but The Citadel and Furman are both interested in doing so.
The Citadel athletic director Mike Capaccio told The State in an email Friday morning, “We are investigating and at this time do plan to play a 4 game schedule.”
Capaccio added that he does expect one of those games to be Clemson.
Clemson and The Citadel were originally scheduled to play Nov. 14, before Clemson’s revised 2020 schedule was released last week. The Tigers are now expected to host the Bulldogs Sept. 19.
Furman AD Jason Donnelly said Thursday, after the SoCon announced fall sports were canceled but teams could play up to four nonconference games, that the school “will thoroughly evaluate all of our options moving forward.”
A Wofford spokesperson told The State, “We do not expect to play games in the fall.”
Clemson’s current, official 2020 schedule lists an opponent to be determined for Sept. 19.
Clemson already has a contract to play The Citadel this season, a deal that will pay the Bulldogs $450,000. The two teams are also slated to meet in 2024.
Tigers coach Dabo Swinney said earlier this month that Clemson’s nonconference opponent was down to one of two teams.
“I think it’s kind of up in the air between Akron and The Citadel, I guess. The two we already had,” Swinney said.
The Mid-American Conference, in which Akron plays, has since postponed fall sports.
