Charles Barkley Says Wembanyama Is Learning One Brutal Finals Truth
Charles Barkley believes Victor Wembanyama is getting a real NBA Finals education against Karl-Anthony Towns and the New York Knicks. After dominating the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference finals, Wembanyama entered the championship series looking ready for the next step.
But through the early games, Towns has made things much more difficult, using his size, strength, and experience to keep Wemby uncomfortable. Barkley still believes Wembanyama will eventually own the league, but right now, he thinks the young San Antonio Spurs star is learning just how different the Finals can be.
Speaking about Wemby's performance after the game Barkley said, "Wemby's in shock right now. It's probably been a long time since he got his ass kicked like this... Wemby's spinning... He's 22. He's gonna own the league soon. But right now, big KAT is just taking his (expletive) to the woodshed. Plain and simple."
Karl-Anthony Towns has turned into a much bigger problem for San Antonio than many expected.
Coming into the Finals, most of the spotlight was naturally on Jalen Brunson and Victor Wembanyama. But Towns has changed the tone of the series by doing a bit of everything for New York. He is scoring without forcing things, pulling down tough rebounds, making smart passes, and giving the Knicks a real answer in the Wembanyama matchup.
That is what makes this so important. Wembanyama is still putting up numbers, but he is having to work for everything. Towns is not letting him glide through possessions or control the game as easily as he did in earlier rounds.
Game 2 showed both sides of Wembanyama's situation. He nearly powered San Antonio back into the game with a huge second-half push, but the ending was painful. A late mistake gave New York the opening it needed, and the final shot did not drop.
For Barkley, that is the lesson. Wembanyama's talent is obvious, but the Finals are not just about talent. They are about strength, patience, decision-making, and handling pressure when one possession can decide everything. Right now, Towns is making sure Wembanyama learns that the hard way.
