Knicks Survive Wembanyama Scare as Magic Johnson Highlights the Real Difference

The New York Knicks had to fight for every bit of Game 2, but they found a way when it mattered most. The San Antonio Spurs pushed them right to the edge behind another big Victor Wembanyama performance, yet New York stayed composed late and escaped with a one-point win to take a 2-0 lead in the NBA Finals.

After the game, Magic Johnson pointed to the Knicks' balance, depth, and clutch execution as the real difference, with key contributions coming from more than just their stars.

Following the game, Johnson shared his thoughts on X saying, "Victor Wembanyama played a spectacular game tonight with 29 points and 9 rebounds, but his turnover in the closing seconds proved too costly for the Spurs to get the win. Karl-Anthony Towns was impressive on both ends of the floor, dominating the first half and making nothing easy for Wembanyama defensively, finishing with 21 points and 13 rebounds."

The five time NBA champion continued, "That 3rd quarter told the whole story for the Knicks. With Towns and Brunson on the bench, Mikal Bridges and Landry Shamet stepped up and secured the lead heading into the 4th. The Spurs made a strong push late but Brunson delivered the clutch shot and free throws when the Knicks needed them most. Tonight belonged to everyone in the Knicks' locker room - it was a complete team victory!"

Game 2 was the kind of night that can completely change the feel of a Finals series.

For most of the second half, New York looked like the cleaner and more settled team. The offense had different answers, the defense made life uncomfortable, and San Antonio spent long stretches trying to fight uphill. Then the game nearly flipped.

The Spurs found a late burst, the crowd came alive, and suddenly what looked like a controlled Knicks win became a tense closing battle. Wembanyama helped spark that comeback, but the final possessions showed how cruel this stage can be. One bad decision, one missed chance, and the whole night turned.

That is where New York benefited from its experience and variety. Karl-Anthony Towns gave them a strong interior presence, Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby made timely plays, and Landry Shamet's shot-making gave the Knicks important breathing room when things got tight.

San Antonio will feel like it let one get away, especially after putting itself in position to steal it late. But New York will not care much about how messy it looked.

The Knicks survived the scare, protected their advantage, and now return home with all the pressure on the Spurs.
