Spain's Lamine Yamal Emerges as Front-Runner to Break a 16-Year World Cup Record

For the first time in the tournament’s history, the 2026 FIFA World Cup will feature 48 teams competing across three host nations, the United States, Canada, and Mexico, spanning 16 cities and 104 total matches, running from June 11 to July 19.

That’s 40 more games than Qatar 2022, and with a prizefund up 50% from the last edition, the stakes have never been higher.

The final drops at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19, and Estadio Azteca in Mexico City hosts the opener.

Simply put, this is the most ambitious World Cup ever built, and it could also be the stage where an 18-year-old rewrites history.

Thomas Müller, who broke out at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, currently holds the World Cup record for the youngest Golden Boot winner.

The Bayern Munich forward was just 20 years old when he won the award, scoring five goals as Germany stormed to a third-place finish, claiming both the Golden Boot and Best Young Player award in the same tournament.

Now, 16 years later, the record is still standing. But maybe not for much longer.

Enter Lamine Yamal, the 18-year-old Barcelona winger who’s already being called the best young player on the planet. On Thursday, June 4, ESPN’s Roberto Rojas published a deep dive into the World Cup records most likely to fall in 2026, and predicted that Yamal could be the one to break Müller’s record.

“After helping Spain win Euro 2024, the Barcelona forward enters the World Cup as one of the faces of the next generation. If Spain make a deep run, Yamal could find himself in contention not only for the Golden Boot but also for multiple individual awards before even turning 20,” Rojas wrote.

Yamal is a Spanish soccer prodigy who emerged from Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy and became one of the youngest players ever to debut for the club.

He’s already won multiple major trophies, including three La Liga titles, a Copa del Rey, two Spanish Super Cups, and the UEFA Euro 2024 championship with Spain.

He was also named Young Player of Euro 2024, won the Kopa Trophy as the world’s top under-21 player, and was the runner-up for the Ballon d’Or in 2025, soccer’s most prestigious honor.

He was also just named La Liga Player of the Season, becoming the youngest winner of the award after contributing 16 league goals and 11 assists across 26 starts.

One potential obstacle, however, is his health. Yamal injured his hamstring converting a penalty for Barcelona on April 22 and missed the rest of the season with the club.

However, Spain’s coach Luis de la Fuente has said recently he expects Yamal to be ready for the team’s World Cup opener on June 15.

Spain lands in Group H alongside Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay, a manageable draw.

Spain opens its World Cup campaign against Cape Verde on June 15 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, with kickoff scheduled for 12:00 p.m. ET.

La Roja then faces Saudi Arabia on June 21 at 12:00 p.m. ET, also in Atlanta, before closing out group play against Uruguay in Zapopan, Mexico, on June 27 at 8:00 p.m. ET.

If Yamal gets minutes and picks up where he left off before the injury, Spain could advance deep into the knockout bracket, and the Golden Boot could come with it.

And he won’t even turn 19 until July 13, meaning he would break Müller’s record by nearly two full years.
