Sophie Cunningham Addresses Viral Caitlin Clark-Stephanie White Incident

A viral sideline moment involving Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark and head coach Stephanie White drew significant attention during the team’s 100-84 road loss to the Portland Fire, which marked the start of a disappointing two-game losing streak.

With the game seemingly going awry, video footage showed Clark seated on the bench while White yelled at her from a chair during a timeout on the sidelines.

Clark appeared to snap back at her head coach, putting both hands up in the air in frustration, and White then told another player to take Clark’s seat in the huddle.

The video footage, which shows Clark shaking her head, appearing frustrated near the huddle, led to speculation that there is a fractured relationship between the player and the coach.

Sophie Cunningham, Clark’s Fever teammate, recently weighed in on what occurred, even confessing she didn’t necessarily agree with how Clark handled things, and adding her opinion of what occurred in that heated sideline moment.

“I don’t even know if there was any inside scoop. I think that Steph and CC are just two very competitive people who both want to win, and sometimes you bump heads, but it was all out of good intent of wanting the same thing,” Cunningham said on the “Show Me Something” podcast.

“I’m not condoning her actions, like I think there’s room to grow in how you respond to things, but [Caitlin] would say the same thing, and her and Steph are fine,” she said during her podcast. “That’s like their relationship, and then later that night or the next morning, they hugged it out and talked about it.”

In addition to indicating that social media and the news media blew things out of proportion, Cunningham also suggested that when people are in very competitive situations like that four days a week, “stuff is gonna happen.”

Since that sideline moment went viral, the Fever have defeated Angel Reese and the Atlanta Dream in their first game of the Commissioner’s Cup, 83-71. Clark finished with 17 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds in the win.

That also featured new viral moments, including Clark celebrating with her head coach and even hugging her during the team’s much-needed victory.

It helped them maintain their spot within the top three teams of the Eastern Conference as they head to New York to face the Liberty on Saturday evening.
