  • Harris averaged 9.7 minutes and 3.3 points across 36 games this season.
  • He retains two years of eligibility and seeks expanded playing time elsewhere.

The mass exodus to the NCAA transfer portal has begun for men’s basketball and Duke now has a player who is leaving: Darren Harris.

The 6-5 sophomore guard from Herndon, Virginia, was the first defection from the Blue Devils, who were ranked No. 1 in the country and the No. 1 overall seed in the 2026 NCAA Tournament before losing to Connecticut. His entry into the portal was first reported Tuesday by On3.com.

Harris was a part of the Devils’ rotation throughout the season but averaged just 9.7 minutes in 36 games, scoring 3.3 points a game.

Harris had a career-high 16 points in Duke’s 100-56 road win at Notre Dame this season. Asked after the game if his lack of playing time had been frustrating, he told the N&O:

“I can’t complain. I’m on the best team in the country. My job is to be ready, be professional.

“Every time I get out there, every practice, I just try to make the most out of it. When my name is called, I’m always going to be ready. Any time I get to go out there and play significant minutes, I try to take advantage of it.”

Harris has two years of eligibility remaining.
