The next play: Here’s what coming up this week in Triangle sports
One nearby baseball team will hit the road this week, while another will return home.
The Carolina Mudcats return home for their first full-week homestand of the season beginning Tuesday when they host the Lynchburg Hillcats at Five County Stadium.
The Mudcats gave the home crowd a show last time out, with a three-game sweep of Down East, during which they scored 25 runs.
Micha Bello has been on fire for the ‘Cats, erupting for 10 hits in the first six games of the season through Thursday, five of which were doubles. He also scored eight runs and walked three times in that stretch, good for a .476 batting average and 1.399 OPS.
Meanwhile, over in Durham, the Bulls are off to a slower start this year than last, but will look to turn that all around this week when they head out to Norfolk to take on the Tides after completing a six-game homestand of their own at DBAP on Sunday.
The Tides have had a stronger start to the season, led by Yusnial Diaz, Terrin Vavra and Jahmai Jones on offense, all of whom are hitting over .340.
Leading the way for the Bulls on this young season are Ford Proctor and Isaac Paredes.
Road warriors
The Hurricanes will finish the stretch run of the NHL season mostly on the road, with just two home games remaining at PNC Arena this season. First up this week will be the second game of a two-game western swing. The first was the team’s anticipated rematch Saturday night in Colorado, and the second will be Tuesday night at Arizona.
The Canes return home for a Thursday night contest against the Winnipeg Jets before hitting the road one last time this season for three games in four nights in the New York metro area. They’ll play at New Jersey on Saturday, at the Islanders on Sunday, and at the Rangers the following Tuesday before returning home for their home and regular-season finale against the Devils.
