Big changes for Adam and Joe (and others) at WRAL’s sports radio station, 99.9 The Fan
Big changes are coming to WRAL’s sports radio station, WCMC-FM’s 99.9 The Fan.
The popular local show “Adam & Joe,” with Adam Gold and Joe Ovies, will give way to a new show featuring Ovies and longtime News & Observer sportswriter Joe Giglio. That show keeps the “Adam & Joe” afternoon drive time slot of 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Gold will get his own show, “The Adam Gold Show,” which will air weekdays from noon to 3 p.m. The “Adam & Joe” show consistently ranked among the top local sports talk shows in the nation by Radio Ink.
Gold has been a presence in the Triangle for more than 20 years and will continue his duties as the station’s Carolina Hurricanes reporter, according to a news release from 99.9 The Fan. Gold hosts the podcast “Canes Corner.”
Dennis Glasgow, program and operations director for 99.9 The Fan, said in the news release: “It’s not often that you have the unique opportunity to get better when moving an air personality of Adam Gold’s stature to another timeslot and also add a sports reporting vet like Joe Giglio to an already established show, so we’re very fortunate. In the end our listeners are the big winners.”
Lauren Brownlow, a sports reporter who appears on the “Adam & Joe” show, will likely appear on both programs, according to Brian Maloney, general manager for WCMC-FM, owned by Capitol Broadcasting Company.
“The David Glenn Show,” a regionally syndicated sports talk radio show that is owned by Curtis Media and currently airs in the noon to 3 slot on 99.9, will no longer air on The Fan. “The David Glenn Show” has aired in this market for the past decade.
The “Sports Channel 8” show, which airs 10 a.m. to noon, will continue as is.
Joe Giglio leaves The News & Observer
Giglio, who has worked at The News & Observer for 25 years, will leave the paper to join Capitol Broadcasting Company.
Giglio, a native of New Jersey, is a 1997 graduate of N.C. State and a notable Technician alum. He started at The N&O in 1995 as a sports agate clerk, answering phones and putting box scores in the paper, then becoming a writer in 1999. Giglio started covering ACC sports in 2004 and N.C. State in 2008.
His last day at The News & Observer will be Selection Sunday on March 15. Maloney said Giglio will be a CBC employee as of March 16, but he isn’t sure when he’ll officially be on-air.
“Obviously we’re very excited to have him,” Maloney said.
Maloney said Giglio will function in a “multiplatform capacity.”
“Joe will be on the radio everyday, he’ll be providing content to WRAL SportsFan (website) everyday, and also providing insight and information to WRAL TV News,” he said.
Todd Adams, a sports editor at The News & Observer, praised the work done by Giglio at the paper.
“Joe is obviously a legend around the News & Observer,” Adams said. “He’s been here for almost 25 years and over that time he consistently did an amazing job not just breaking news on his beat, but with digging up wonderful in-depth features and analysis.
“We’re very happy for him today, and we’ll all be pulling for him in his new adventure. But he’ll be greatly missed.”
In the event that NC State makes the NCAA tournament, Adams said The News & Observer will tag-team the coverage using other sportswriters on staff.
WCMC-FM, branded as 99.9 The Fan, is an ESPN Radio affiliate. It has been the flagship station for the Carolina Hurricanes since 2007. It also broadcasts the weekly football and basketball shows for coaches at N.C. State (CBC’s WRAL-FM sister station broadcasts the Wolfpack games).
99.9 The Fan is also the Raleigh affiliate for the Carolina Panthers.
In 2015, the North Carolina Association of Broadcasters named 99.9 The Fan the North Carolina Large Market Station of the Year, and the station was a finalist for the Sports Station of the Year award the following year.
