ECU cancels trip for Virginia Tech game due to concerns about Hurricane Florence

East Carolina’s football team will not be traveling to play Virginia Tech this weekend due to safety concerns from Hurricane Florence, the school announced Tuesday.

ECU (1-1) was scheduled to play the 13th-ranked Hokies (2-0) in Blacksburg, Va., on Saturday. However, the university released a statement Tuesday afternoon, which cited the potentially “catastrophic” effects of Florence, a Category Four hurricane.

“The safety and welfare for everyone in the path of this storm is the University’s main priority and decisions regarding athletics events are made in the best interest of ensuring the safety of student-athletes, coaches, staff and their families,” the statement said.

ECU is coming off of a 41-19 victory over North Carolina last weekend in Greenville. The victory was a bounce-back win for the Pirates, who opened the season with a 28-23 loss at the hands of North Carolina A&T, a non-FBS opponent.

The Pirates will resume their season on September 22, with a road game against American Athletic Conference foe South Florida.
